PART 1

  • KRD subject:

At first, I thought that KRD would be the toughest subject among this 3 but, it turns to be ok for me. This might be due to Dr Suzana had always emphasize on those main areas that we needed to put more effort on it. In addition, she gave us a lot of exercises during the lecture time and guide us how to answer it. Her method of teaching forces me to stay focus all the time during the lecture. These allow me to have more understanding and experience on solving problems on KRD. However, I will still put more effort on this subject in order get more understanding on it as it become more and more interesting.

  • PSLP

From this subject, I have learned that the importance on process safety and how this would prevent and save us from disastrous event when something in the process goes wrong. At first, I thought that this subject will be just another HSE subject for me but, I am wrong. It’s just similar to HSE but it applies more in the real situation. Dr Dzulkarnain is also teaching us great in this subject. As he always prepare some main lecture slides for us and give us exercise to complete in the class. He also prepared assignment for almost every lecture so, we will get more understanding after every lecture.

  • CPDIC

Dr Abbas, the lecturer of this subject already put out great effort and try to explain things clearly to us. However, I found out that this subject are rather difficult than the other two subjects. This should be deal to the involvement of previous subject Ordinary Differential Equation for some of the calculations. As time passed, I might have forgotten some of the method of calculations and not so used to it as I was. Furthermore, lack of understanding in this subject might be one of the reasons I found out that this subject is tough. As Dr Abbas said, we need to read more and do more exercises in order to master this subject. Therefore, I will use more time to study and practice this subject in order to understand and score it.

PART 2

  • KRD subject:

On the second half of the semester, Dr. Tazli introduced a new way of teaching and learning method. For me, I am more preferable on this new way of learning system. Although we have less classes, but we are able to be more focus on the subject. This is because Dr. Tazli’s lectures are using video lecture and mind map style, where we actually could study or listen whenever we want, as we decide when to watch the video, when we are ready to learn, when we are focus. It’s all depends on our own time schedule, our own time arrangement. This is the real ELearning in our undergraduate. On previous half of the semester, the rate law is given. But on this part, I need to determine the reaction order and specific reaction rate using most suitable type of analysis technique for a particular problem. Furthermore, I have also learnt about the types multiple reactions and the selection of reactor for it. I also understand on maximizing desired product in parallel and series reactions. Adiabatic energy balance, the heat effects in the reactor and energy balance area also learned from chapter 8.

  • PSLP

In the second part of the semester, Dr. Dzul is much planned for the course. He distributes more assignment on respective topic of PSLP. Although we have to rush to finish these assignment before every class end, but we are able to understand more on every new topic that he taught. By following the equations on each chapter and step by step method by Dr. Dzul on answering the question, makes me feel that PSLP is actually easy to understand and work on it.

  • CPDIC

For the second part of CPDIC, we are learning on feedback controller. I have learnt on PID controller which we need to see its response, offset stable or not stable. I am able to know what a closed-loop control system is, develop the block diagrams and derive the closed-loop transfer functions from it. By using Routh Hurwitz Criteria, I am able to determine the stability of the control systems. Furthermore, I am able to analyze the frequency response for control systems and plot the Bode-diagram. I have understand the basic components of P&ID and the basic control instrument as these are all discussed during lectures from Dr. Haslinda. Dr. Haslinda is very nice and explains the concept clearly using different of real life examples to us. In addition, she will always simply call some of us the try out the questions given to us during the lecture. This makes us stay more alert, focus and more understanding to the lecture.

The idea of our board game ‘Engenius’ is implemented from the Monopoly game, but it is based on a chemical industry real life situation. This game is totally design and suitable for chemical engineers or chemical engineering students to play with. As the game proceeds, it will slowly able to strengthen or remind the knowledge on KRD, PSLP and CPDIC. However, to establish this game is not easy, as it is needed to have valid rules and regulations and clear objective of the game. However, in order to initiate this game, I believe that we have a lot more understanding on these subjects before this. As we need to understand these subjects before setting up the game. I also learnt more on creating mind map, video editing, creating website and working as a team.

  • KRD

We have implemented the KRD questions to be compatible to the theme of our board game.  Therefore, we have fully understood on the KRD questions then we only can edit the questions until it is suitable for our board game. In order to score some bonus point, we have decided to include the chapter 4 Isothermal Reactor Design. Thus, this is another challenging part for us.

  • PSLP

For the chapter Toxic release and Dispersion model, it’s just started teaching on week 5. Thus, it is also challenging for us to set some of the question on this chapter. However, the questions prepared for this subject are mostly calculation question and facts. It would be easier for preparing in this case.

  • CPDIC

It is more challenging for CPDIC. As it’s considered quite tough for me so, the question prepared is quite difficult in my opinion. Furthermore, it’s became more challenging on the First and second order processes dynamic behavior chapter because this chapter just started teaching on week 5 too so our understanding on it are not strong as other chapters.

In this mini project, I have learned a lot of new things that I have never experience before. For example, get to know on different kind of technology like the process for food waste, how chemical reaction/process can change this kind of waste into useful material. Furthermore, this mini project allows us to make use of our knowledge on different subject into application. For example, mass balance that we have learned during our first year in Principle of Chemical Engineering is used in this project and P&ID in Engineering Drawing. This project allows us to recall what we have learned and apply it in this project. We are able to further understand on different kind of reactor that learned in KRD due to designing the reactor used in this mini project. The use of HAZOP from PSLP and transfer function and PID controllers in CPDIC in this project make us study more and put more effort on it. However, this mini project is very time consuming but it is totally worth of trying as we could understand more on what we are studying and all new learning experience gained from it.
